What’s New in Treating the Shoulder

New techniques are making the treatment of shoulder injuries less invasive and recovery faster.

The treatment of shoulder injuries has progressed rapidly over the course of the last two decades. Currently, we are experiencing a paradigm shift from open shoulder surgery to minimally invasive shoulder surgery

There are numerous intuitive advantages to minimally invasive shoulder surgery, such as decreased tissue damage, improved visualization and earlier potential for rehab. Many orthopedic surgeons are now learning how to treat most shoulder problems through arthroscopic techniques.

As a result, we are now able to perform complex shoulder reconstructions through arthroscopic portals.

New materials and future developments

In addition, new materials are now available for suture placement in the shoulder. Biocomposite anchors, for example, are now available to replace the metal anchors that were used in earlier surgeries.

Going forward, the next advancements in shoulder treatment will likely be in the area of biologics. Stay tuned for updates on further developments in the treatment of shoulder conditions.
